We're excited to bring you a new feature that could make your journey toward a sustainable lifestyle even easier!
Introducing EcoMeter
Have you noticed that the background on your Loop app homescreen now changes colour? Welcome to EcoMeter, our new feature that shows you in real-time how clean or dirty your electricity from the national grid is.
Why Does This Matter?
While a growing proportion of our energy in the UK comes from renewable sources, we still use 'dirty' fuels to make some of our electricity.
EcoMeter changes colour – from green to amber to red – to reflect 'grid carbon intensity', a measure of how much carbon dioxide is released to generate electricity on the national grid. These dirty and clean periods vary daily and don't automatically coincide with 'peak' and 'off-peak' times. Knowing when these periods occur allows you to make decisions about your energy usage that could significantly impact your carbon footprint.
How Does EcoMeter Help?
As well as the real-time indicator, EcoMeter also provides a 24-hour forecast via a card on the homescreen. By using EcoMeter to help shift your energy use from high carbon intensity periods to low ones, you can make a difference.
For example, on average this year, any usage that you shifted from the 5pm-7pm period to the 3pm-5pm period would have reduced the associated emissions by 10%. Small changes with big impacts if repeated at scale nationwide.
The success of our Summer Turn Down and Save scheme has shown that how clean or dirty our electricity is matters to a lot of households. So, we've made it easier for you to see for yourself. Now you can make smart green choices about when to switch on your energy-hungry appliances and reduce your impact in the process.
We all need to do more to tackle the climate crisis and it doesn't get easier than making positive choices about when to use your things. Dive into the details of EcoMeter here.
Turn Down and Save this Summer
There's still one event left to go and it's not too late to sign up. Each event lasts an hour and if you reduce your use over the hour we’ll enter you into our £200 prize draw. Even better, you'll also be entered into our £2,000 Carbon Hero prize draw once the events are finished.
That's it for this week, but if you have any questions, check out our Knowledge Base - it's full of useful articles and FAQs. Issues using Loop? Our Troubleshooting tool will help resolve them.
